You simply don’t just get magically “discovered”!
I will explain you though, what really does make a difference and what will get you “discovered”.
- Diversify your work! This is major.. If you want to do Fashion Photography, I know you have to specialize and focus your work on that, but I know, and I have seen it happening, companies like photographers that are versatile and that can show great work in every field of photography! So get out and widen your horizons in photography whether is nature, portraits, abstract.. just do it… I know how hard it is to “shoot” things that do not inspire you, for me would be landscapes, I can obviously enjoy and appreciate a beautiful scenery, but I just can’t “picture” it…
- Show everything you can do! Do not wait for an hypothetical client to ask if you are able to do something! I have heard many times photographers and artists that say, “I am sure I could do that no problem”… this just does not cut it… a client does not want your enthusiasm and positivity that you CAN do it, the client wants to see it… you might be able to capture and produce the best pictures ever, but if you do not show it, you ain’t gonna get any work. So again, go out and find your inspiration, create your own projects, imagine, visualize, and produce… that will get you work!
- Networking is everything. It is easier I think if you live in a big city but it is doable anyway anywhere… if in your city/town there is a gallery or a photography group, JOIN IT! It will help you find inspiration and plus get to know people that have been in the business longer that you did, and from them you can “steal” information! I have joined many photography groups and associations, and from all of them I have learned a lot.. and I still do.. More importantly networking helps you find work! Clients many times go to photography associations or groups scouting for low cost photographers! If you are just starting out, that is where you want to be!
- Business Cards are not everything, but MORE! get yourself lots of business cards and give them out! Business cards believe it or not are still a very powerful tool to get your business going! Make sure that on your business cards you include some of your best work! BE VISUAL!
- Get a Portfolio/Blog just as I do, get yourself a portfolio online together with a Blog… the only reason why I say you need a Blog too is because a Blog allows you to interact with your clients and with other photographers… Interaction in the art/creative world is everything! To me is everything knowing that people from around the globe appreciate my pictures and give me feedback! Once you have your website up and running be careful about what you publish on your portfolio, ONLY publish your best work! Your portfolio is sacred! Use your blog for other shots that you might take, like I do, with my iphone pictures!
- Send your Work to the big ones! 8 times out of 10, you won’t get an answer, but who am I to know what is going to happen in your case? So, keep trying, send your best work to agencies and photographers! You never know when is your lucky moment! I will admit it, sometimes it is luck that will get you up there with the big ones!
